As one of Toronto’s leading outdoor soccer venues, BMO Field welcomes thousands of fans during major sporting events. While the stadium is primarily open-air, its enclosed spaces, including luxury suites and hospitality areas, require carefully designed ventilation systems to maintain indoor air quality (IAQ) and occupant comfort.
During high-attendance events, these spaces can experience increased carbon dioxide levels, excess humidity, and reduced air freshness. Maintaining a healthy indoor environment requires a continuous supply of outdoor air to replace contaminated indoor air.
However, introducing large quantities of untreated outdoor air can significantly increase heating and cooling demands, making it challenging to meet the stadium’s energy-efficiency and sustainability objectives.
To address these challenges, HVAC specialists at Kilmer Environmental recommended the installation of a RenewAire HE10RT Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV).
The system uses a static-plate enthalpy core to transfer heat and moisture between outgoing exhaust air and incoming fresh air, reducing the energy required to condition outdoor air.
During warmer months, the ERV helps pre-cool and dehumidify incoming air, while in winter, it recovers heat and moisture to preheat and humidify the fresh air supply.
This energy recovery process helps maintain comfortable indoor conditions during high-occupancy events while reducing the workload on the stadium’s heating and cooling systems.
